Charlotte, N.C. witnessed an electrifying event as fans flocked to the Spectrum Center on Friday night. Instead of the usual Hornets action on the court, four of the tennis world's biggest names took center stage in the Charlotte Invitational. WCCB Charlotte's Zane Cina was on-site and had the opportunity to interact with fans who expressed their eagerness to see more professional tennis in the Queen City.
An Evening of Exhibition Matches
Nearly 16,000 enthusiastic fans filled the Spectrum Center to witness two captivating exhibition matches. The Invitational kicked off with a thrilling encounter between Madison Keys and her self-proclaimed good friend Sloane Stephens. Keys emerged victorious after two sets, with scores of 7-5 and 6-3. In the second exhibition, defending Wimbledon and French Open Champion Carlos Alcaraz faced off against Frances Tiafoe, who donned a Hornets jersey. Tiafoe displayed remarkable determination and pulled off a hard-fought win against Alcaraz after three sets, with scores of 5-7, 6-1, and 11-9.The event not only attracted a large number of tennis fans but also drew the attention of some of Charlotte's top athletes. Greg Olsen, Steve Smith Sr., and Andy Dalton were spotted in the stands, adding to the star-studded atmosphere. Danny Morrison, the Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, emphasized that the Queen City is home to thousands of passionate tennis fans. The foundation aims to leverage this fandom and continue organizing tennis events to bring more excitement to the city.Morrison revealed that his organization dedicated nine months of hard work to make the Charlotte Invitational a reality. "We strive to provide a first-class experience for the fans, and we hope the players feel the same way. Our goal is to have them return for more in the future," Morrison said. He also highlighted the crucial role played by the Charlotte Hornets and Spectrum Center in making the event possible.Some fans were pleasantly surprised to see the Spectrum Center transformed into a tennis court.
